The Democratic National Convention

Published by patriciaarnold at 11:49 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I watched some of the National Democratic Convention yesterday. I thought it was very nice that they gave a tribute to Edward M. Kennedy, I am thinking it is about time. You have to understand how I was raised. My mother was Catholic and adored JFK and Robert Kennedy. She would tell me that she knew exactly where she was when she got the news that Kennedy was assassinated. So yes, I come from a long line of Democrats. I inherited a William Jennings Bryant and JFK campaign button after my grandmother died. So I feel like being a democrat was in my blood.

I remember when Jimmy Carter came to my town to give a speech during his campaign for president and my dad hoisted me on his shoulders so I could spot Jimmy on the train. I remember I waived my little flag.

When I think about Ted Kennedy, I think about how my mother said he deserved to be president. This man represents the downtrodden with that Kennedy strength. Bless him, he is pretty sick now. In his speech he said that “Nothing was keeping him from being there tonight”. I watched Caroling Kennedy and Maria Shriver tear up as get got on the stage. As he turned, I could see one side of the back of his head had been shaved; surely evidence of his surgery. People have joked/mentioned a drinking problem in the past. Well geez, if somebody shot two of my brothers dead I would drink too. He has contributed and suffered through so much. He deserved the homage.

I can understand skepticism about our chosen candidate, Barack Obama. I watched Michelle Obama give her speech, and I must say; even though I am a Hillary Clinton supporter, I was impressed with her delivery. You have to admit, she and her husband are brilliant speakers. I am hopeful, and now I am ready to back him for president. I don’t know if her “reinventing herself failed”. All I know is the tears in her eyes when she talked about her husband. All I know is her and her husband are okay with Ted Kennedy, so they are okay by me.

This was not always the case. As I said, I am a Hillary Clinton supporter; I think her husband’s presidency was a far successful one than President Bush’s. I was also leaning towards John McCain. My father likes him because he is a veteran and a patriot. I still like him just fine. I just prefer Barack Obama because he may represent the best hope of getting anything done. Of course, I am talking about health care and I am talking about the economy. McCain doesn’t see anything fundamentally wrong. I disagree. Just look at the gas prices and food prices.

I also think that the media is very divided right now. Never have I seen such division. It is quite clear we have FOX on one side, CNN and MSNBC on the other. What ever happened to reporting the news as it is? So and so gave a speech. So and so did this. Why does it have to be a spin all of the time? Instead of so and so IS, we hear it SEEMS like so and so IS. I was amazed that on two channels they were broadcasting the DNC and on the other there is Bill O’Reilly talking about what a farce everything is. Why do they have Bill O’Reilly on another channel casting his web of intrigue on what is going on at the DNC. I don’t wish to roast him like Keith Oberman does (which I must admit is funny), but geez!

We may wonder, who is right? Well even if some of my ideas are liberal, I also have conservative leanings. I home school my children which seems weird to a lot of people. Not to me. I have my reasons. It works out great for my family. I am not preaching it as your solution, but as mine.

More than anything, I want to get at the heart of the matter. I want to slice through the rhetoric, through the conspiracy theories, through the BS. This blog will be this Democrat’s search for what is really going on. What are these news agencies trying to do? What are political parties trying to do? What are they really saying? I have kept my opinions to myself for too long.
